U.S. Figure Skating Championships return to Detroit


for the first time in 25 years us figure skating chance will be crowned right here in Detroit the Figure Skating Championships are back moving to Little Caesars arena and we have not hosted this event since the days of Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding it is the premier skating event in the country between the top ladies men’s pairs and ice dance champions Olympic gold medalist Meryl Davis won six national championships with her ice dance partner Charlie white and is a frequent contributor here local 4 so this is the perfect time to bring you in because you always give us that perspective beyond just picking someone to cheer for yeah what do we need to really pay attention to over the next two days right well I think it’s an interesting year for Figure Skating it’s the year after the Olympics and so a lot of familiar faces that people may have seen at the games but of course a lot of newbies as well that we may have not seen before at the championships you just saw a clip of Nathan Chen who you may have seen at the 2018 games he won his first World Championships in the spring so he’s definitely made quite a name for himself well-known in the skating world is the quad King just really pushing the sport forward for the men a new phase potential here we have some of the ice dancers probably the most stacked of the disciplines between the ladies the men the pairs in the ice dance here Madison talk and then Bates so we have some real basic fan favorites in terms of they really do have a strong following is there any one in particular that you think might surprise us the team here at Kaitlyn Wyatt and Roman Baker they were alternates for the 2018 games looking to be on the podium this year so we’ll be expecting a big splash from them this year okay and for you personally your reporting not only for us but for us figure skating the Olympic Channel you’re gonna be bouncing wearing a lot of hats this week but I’m excited I mean it’s it’s an exciting time to sort of watch these young skaters enter this new phase of their careers and in particular audiences might want to watch out for Elissa Lu she’s a 13 year old lady skater she’s gonna be attempting potentially up to three triple axels in the ladies event which is unheard of incredibly talented such a bright future ahead of her beautiful scanner 13 years old so she’s actually too young to attend not only this senior world championships but she’s too young even to attended Junior Championship goodness so the first year she will be eligible to compete internationally on the senior level will be the next Winter Olympics in 2022 so we get a sneak peek at her this weekend here in Detroit I actually just interviewed her about 20 minutes ago okay adorable young lady I can’t wait to looking right – all right Thank You Mara we really appreciate it yeah all right well we will definitely have all the latest from all the competition this weekend online and on local 4 you’ll see our special champions on ice this Friday at 7:30 Devyn Kimberly and burning will be there and birdie sits down with Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir so that’s gonna be a fun interview Okafor is your station for the US Figure Skating Championships
