Transition From The Swim To Bike Faster | Top 5 T1 Tips


– The transition isn’t just a means of going from one discipline to the next, it’s part of the race. And having a quick transition could improve your performance further. So, we have pulled a few tips from some of the elite and professional
triathletes for T1, going from the swim to the bike. (upbeat techno music) So, to start off with
getting your wetsuit off after the swim, once it’s wet and once you’ve run all
the way to your bike, can be quite hard. So, quick and easy solution is to use a little bit of baby
oil on your lower legs and forearms before you
put your wetsuit on. Now, you really don’t want this stuff all over your hands
before you go swimming, so I suggest using a bag or even get a friend to apply it for you. Essentially, the oil acts
a little like a lubricant, meaning that you can get your
wetsuit off nice and quickly. (upbeat techno music) Rather than placing your
helmet on the floor, consider placing it on handlebars, or even hanging from one of the straps. That way, it’s quick and easy
to grab from waist height. And by laying the straps out to side, will hopefully prevent the straps from getting caught or tangled when you go to place the
helmet onto you head. Another thing to consider is the side that you place your helmet on. So, think about which side
you’re going to remove and place your wetsuit
and how you’re going to grab your bike and
run out of transition. So, the elites will put the helmet on the same side so they don’t have to lean over their bike
to grab the helmet. I know it only seems like a minute saving, but all these little things help. (upbeat techno music) Granted, not everyone
is doing a flying mount from T1 onto their bike, but if you are, then using elastics
could help you massively. Without the elastics your
shoes could end up scraping, bouncing, or even getting
caught upside-down on the floor. But the real bonus to using elastics is that it holds the shoes in place, ready for you place your feet onto or even straight into your bike shoes. Now, how you attach these elastics is entirely up to you, but
the most popular method is to attach or loop an elastic from the right shoe to the front mech, and the left shoe to
the rear quick release. But the other way round
is absolutely fine. So, just attach it to anything solid or strong on the bike. (upbeat techno music) It’s important that you consider the gear that you leave your bike in, in T1. Now leaving it in the wrong gear could make the bike mount quite tricky. Generally, you want a relatively easy gear so that you can build your momentum up from a slow speed. Obviously, check for any gradients
after the mount line too. For instance, if there’s
a hill immediately after the mount line, you may want to opt for an easier gear, you may even want to drop it into the small ring. The last thing you want is to be stuck in too hard a gear, trying
to build your momentum up. (upbeat techno music) You won’t see a whole lot on the floor in an elite transition. To keep things slick, they’ll try to attach everything they can to the bike. That means gels, sunnies,
and even warm weather gear. The idea being that they’ll put on any gear whilst they’re on the bike, making their transition much quicker and making sure that they
make any packs out of T1. Now there are different
methods to attaching your gels and nutrition to your bike. You can use elastics or
you can even use tape. Now I definitely used to prefer using something like electrical tape. And I’d just attach the
gel to the top tube, along the tear line of the gel. So, I’d wrap the tape around, and that meant that when I grabbed the gel it would open at the same time. And another method is to attach around the main body of the gel. And you can do that,
again, to the top tube, and then just fold back
the tape at the ends, creating a little tab, so
it’s quick and easy to remove. (upbeat techno music) So, there’s a handful of tips from the elite triathletes

  1. some races i've done don't allow race belts inside the wetsuit (or they are a pool swim), so when having them in T1, i've realised having them already clipped up and sliding your legs into them can save valuable seconds in Transition rather than having it unclipped and struggling to get it clipped on around your waist

  2. Can heather do one of these for longer formats where you can't do flying mounts or need to use a transition bag instead of laying it by the bike?

  3. Never knew baby oil was ok to use on wetsuits but it looks like it is. I prefer body glide or suit juice as it is less messy but might not work as well.

  4. Putting your helmet up might save some time if it's still there when you get to T1. It looks like the elites have more area then most of us age groupers and I've found my helmet a couple of bikes over with my sunglasses on the ground when I get to T1 because people are grabbing bikes as fast as they can and racks move. I leave my helmet on the ground now so that it's consistently where I left it.

  5. Can you guys highlight some the tech the para-athletes use to overcome their handicaps? I really want to know some of the cool hacks they might be using.

  6. I've found cutting a very thin elastic and then tie it tight so it snaps works well. For gels I use an elastic band and attach gels to my water bottle like in cycling races.

  7. In my first triathlon I did an awesome flying mount, sprinted away and then had to stop again, because my shoes were switched.

  8. I didn't use elastics on a flying mount once. I then ran into a traffic cone and it took about a half mile to get my shoes on. True story.

  9. I agree with some other commenters that it would be great to have a bike mount tutorial, perhaps with different options/skill progression/tips/things to avoid. As for time saving, do a few transition entrance/exit run throughs before the race so you know exactly where your bike is and where you're going.

  10. When I used elastics (rubber bands) for the first time the bands never broke off and just kept stretching. I had to remove them with my hands. Any tips..?

  11. Im having a hard time doing flying mount on t1. Pros and some age groupers doing it make it looks so easy. can give us the best way techniques how to ace it. More wattag gtn!

  12. Best solution for the wetsuit is to cut the legs short at a diagonal so there is a big gap. Just cut as far up as possible where there is still a taped seam. A diagonal cut makes a bigger hole. And lots of baby oil.

  13. Since I tend to be in the top 15% in terms of T1 time, one tip for the bottom 85%: just hurry. That's right. Moving your body quickly helps, and it's no joke that people sometimes act as if they weren't racing.

  14. # Ask GTN: Why do triathletes attach their shoes to the pedal? I watched them and could not find a reason; on the contrary, I think it’s time wasting pedaling with the feet on the shoe and then try to put your feet into them while biking, instead of pedaling full throttle with the shoes mounted in the transition.

  15. Can you do a test video to quantify how effective these tips are? Eg how much time do you save by rubber banding shoes vs running in bike shoes and stopping to mount? Would be both informative and funny.

  16. Where to put the sunglass? I saw that the pros are firstly putting them on the helmet, while cycling the putting them over the straps, and before the running under the straps. Is ot right?

  17. Practicing Swim to Bike transitions is key. "Free time" for the taking. Since I train indoors a lot in cold climate, I like to do Swim to Bike Brick workouts and I use those to practice my transitions. Works so well! Like in this video https://youtu.be/5Js2aaiH5Y4

  18. For wetsuit removal off the feet, baby oil works well but can be messy. Better sequence is after your suit is on. Easiest & non-messy option that lasts well even in seawater is Spray & Cook but opt for the olive oil type. AFTER putting wetsuit on, spray ankles & top of feet and lastly the non-watch wrist & top of both hands. It literally takes a few seconds. Then cap the aerosol can and pop it back in your bag.

  19. What do you do with your bike computer during the swim portion of the race? Do you turn it on when you get into T1? Do you hit start in the morning before T1 closes and you start the swim, then when pulling into T1 after the swim reset the computer and hit start as you exit T1? What do you recommend?
