Olympic figure skaters to perform in 2019 Figure Skating Championships in Detroit

figure skating fans from all over the country and I guess all over the world are gonna descend on Detroit next month for the 2019 US Figure Skating Championships at Little Caesars arena one pair expected to be performing ice dancing duo and Metro Detroit natives Madison chock and Evan Bates the last time we saw them was at the Winter Games when they fell during their free program our Jamie Edmond shows us what they’ve been up to since then when the 2019 US Figure Skating Championships come here to Little Caesars Arena it will be a homecoming for Madison chock and Evan Bates they trained here in Metro Detroit for a long time but recently decided to make a change and they can’t wait to debut their new look Madison chock and Evan Bates are favorites in the ice dancing world which is why it was so tough for fans to watch their fall in the Olympics in Pyeongchang Madison says it was hard to live through it was definitely a shock because we knew our metal hopes had just vanished out the window with that fall it was then that the duo decided it’s time to make a change our brains work in four year cycles so we made a big change this offseason and we moved to Montreal they believe their best chance at a medal in 2022 was the head north we just wanted to push ourselves and challenge ourselves in a different way and we knew that Montreal would be the best place for us to do that the coaches they’re incredible and that’s where we saw ourselves and how I think we can get to the next Olympic Games we’ve been here for so long in Michigan and I think sometimes what’s familiar can become comfortable and as an athlete looking to maximize our potential what’s comfortable isn’t always what’s best chok and Bates joined two other US teams at their new training center in Montreal they say those teams push each other and their new french-canadian coaches give them new perspective to their skating then our coaches are Marie frost du Brey and Patrice Lausanne and Romain Berman their French language pronunciation still need some more but they feel they’ve put themselves in the best position for growth and they hope to show that off come January we love our programs we love our new material and we can’t wait to debut it at the US Championships they add if you’ve never been to a skating competition this one would be a good one to start with you have to see skating live it’s it’s so different than seeing it on TV you get all of the emotions and you can feel the skaters like when they’re where they’re skating really fast and they’re jumping you feel the energy and the breeze of the skaters going by and I think it’s magical yeah Madison has been dealing with an ankle injury since the Olympics but through surgery and recovery she says she’s good to go and because Evan is from Metro Detroit and Madison trained here for so long they expect most of these seats to be filled up with family and friends Jamie Edmunds local 4
