How To Butter With Grabs On A Snowboard

Buttering Like A Boss. This series of
buttering tutorials build on our Basics Of Buttering series, so make sure you’ve
watched those tutorials first as it’s fundamental for the moves and techniques
that we cover in these videos. While riding on your tail, experiment with
grabbing your board. The easiest grab is a Tail Grab. It’s a good exercise because
it forces you to move your hips outside of your back leg and into a butter.
Try doing a Double Tail Grab or a Seatbelt, grabbing your tail with your front
hand. Doing difficult grabs like this will help to stretch your body into different
positions that you’re not used to. Grabbing the nose of your board is
significantly harder than grabbing your tail. While riding downhill you have to
move your weight a lot further forward than you think, which is an uncomfortable
feeling. The flatter the slope you try on, the easier it will be. Go slow and force
yourself to do it. It doesn’t hurt to fall at slow speeds. As your balance
improves you can try to grab the tail with your back hand and either grab or just
touch the edge of your board with your other hand. These exercises get you used
to exaggerating your weight over the ends of your board.
They’re all ideas to build your skills so you can start learning the hard
butter tricks that you want to do. You can get the feeling of what grabs feel
like using a snowboard or a training board in your living room. To challenge
your skills, try combining presses with grabs on a Balance Bar. Try adding small movements to your butters
while grabbing the tail by opening up your shoulders and increasing pressure
onto your heel edge. Using your heel edge is easier to start with, but remember
also try buttering Backside on your toe edge. While grabbing your nose, you can
also start to butter in either the Frontside or Backside direction. This
tutorial was filmed at Whistler Blackcomb. I’m Nev Lapwood from Snowboard
Addiction, our goal is to improve your riding!
